[YYYY] Impact Plan

Employee Name: []

Direct Manager: []

Helper β€” This template focuses on clarity and measurability. Each objective should be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-Bound). Please keep in mind that all companies value impact across the board, make it your priority.

Section 1: Productivity & Impact

Helper β€” Productivity goals should focus on direct added value as individual contributions. These are primarily derived from our day-to-day work. Sections are arranged in such a way that as you are more senior you end up biasing (not exclusively) towards the last one (1.1 - Junior, 1.2 - Mid, 1.3 - Senior).

1.1 Direct Feature Delivery

Helper β€” Directly targeting work planned for the team. Objectives do not need to be specific if you do not know the work for the next window of time; you can also add objectives like: β€œI will lead/support 2 features that involve major efforts (>6weeks of work)”. Do come back to update as soon as you have clarity.

Objective Template:

Description: [Detail the contribution or tasks for the employee]

Measurement: [Define how successful delivery will be tracked and measured]

Target Review/Completion: Jan 12, 2026

1.2 Operational Excellence

Helper β€” Identify how you can contribute to the stability, reliability, and general health of the systems you are taking care of. Make sure the impact and the outcome are measurable; we want specific goals and apparent identified gaps.

1.3 Larger Team Effectiveness

Helper β€” Being effective yourself is a fantastic milestone, but the impact you have on those around you multiplies. As you advance in seniority, you should always be on the lookout for how you could make your peers more efficient.

Section 2: Visibility & Collaboration

Helper β€” This section focuses on your β€œsocial” visibility and growth, do not underestimate the importance of your soft skills in your career growth. Sections are arranged in such a way that as you are more senior you end up biasing (not exclusively) towards the last one (1.1 - Junior, 1.2 - Mid, 1.3 - Senior).

2.1 Direct Team Collaboration

Helper β€” Goals to enhance interaction and cooperation within the immediate team. Objectives here can be process changes, leading new efforts of alignment & communication, and other points of perspective you and only you can bring to the table.

2.2 Outside Team Visibility

Helper β€” Working with your direct team is the first milestone; we now need to identify your internal Group & Division network. How do we break team boundaries and share our work and knowledge? Objectives include inter-team sharing sessions, establishing POC with other teams, and collaborating on larger initiatives or guilds.

2.3 Stakeholder Engagement

Section 3: Personal Development

Helper β€” Your development and capabilities are your most important resources and are by no means to be just a mutual/non-verbal agreement. This section focuses on how you will grow and the areas you want to explore/improve on.

3.1 In-depth Knowledge

Helper β€” Pick an area that is your day-to-day specialty/expertise. What do you need to explore to get better in-depth knowledge of it? What kind of resources do you need? Objectives can look like obtaining an AWS certification, contributing to a library we’re extensively using, s.o.

3.2 Horizontal Knowledge

Helper β€” How can I enrich my horizontal knowledge on subjects adjacent/congruent to my specialty? These additional horizons give you an edge when presenting your perspectives but also on the work market in general. Objectives here could be reading a book, listening to a podcast, or exploring Product Management, Design, or other neighboring topics.

Sunday Field Notes

The talk was one hour. The notes are every Sunday.

One short note most weeks on engineering leadership, teams, and building a career in public β€” the same thinking you just heard, without pretending I've figured it out. No pitch, no cadence guilt, leave in one click.
