Last week, we established the Handshake Protocol. We defined the API contract to kill latency. But once the connection is secure, you have to answer the hardest question in engineering: What are we actually building?
In recent months, the most common reason I've failed manager candidates in interviews at Stripe is their inability to articulate a clear vision for their team's existence.
They have the "magnitude" (they can manage tasks), but they lack the "direction" (they can't define the North Star).
In physics, a Vector is defined by magnitude and direction. If your team's vectors aren't aligned, the result is significantly less than the sum of its parts.
TL;DR: You're just burning energy to stay in the same place.
Whether I'm leading a squad at a global giant, a scrappy startup, or even organizing a project in the small countryside village where I grew up, the principle is universal:
In order to rally people, you need a story they can resonate with.
A vision isn't a corporate slogan; it's the Target Architecture of your team's soul. If you don't iterate on it daily, you aren't leading; you're just observing entropy.
To build a story that rallies the organism, I run a continuous "Reality Check" against these five queries:
The 5 Queries of the Reality Check
1. The Destination
What is the specific world state we are trying to create?
2. The Location Sensor
Where are we right now, honestly? No fluff allowed.
3. The Telemetry
What are the 3 milestones that prove we aren't just "busy," but actually moving?
4. The Node Role
How does this specific person's career trajectory intersect with this mission?
5. The Strategic Discard
What are we explicitly not doing so we can win where it matters?
The Leadership Reality Check
Vision is the only thing that scales.
You can't sudo your way into inspiration. You have to tell a story so
compelling and so consistent that it becomes the "red line" through every PR, every
meeting, and every 1:1.
If your team doesn't know why they exist, they don't belong to a mission โ they're just passengers in someone else's roadmap.
Question for the Lab: What's the one query from the Reality Check that your team would struggle with most โ and why? ๐
